Johnson C. Smith basketball gain is Winston-Salem State’s loss.

Mount Tabor guard Cayse Minor, who averaged 20 points per game as a senior, de-committed from the Rams and will sign with the Golden Bulls on May 20.

“After sitting down with my family I felt like I would develop more as a player and a person moving to Charlotte,” Minor told the Winston-Salem Journal in an email. “Also, I feel like the city of Charlotte has better opportunities as a business major.”

Minor’s commitment to WSSU was non-binding because he hadn’t signed the national letter of intent.

Minor was the first player to commit for this year’s class. The Rams are trying to replace four of their top five scorers who all exhausted their eligibility.

Minor, a 6-3 combo guard, averaged eight rebounds at Mount Tabor, which went 23-3 last season. He will play in the East-West All-Star Game this summer at the Greensboro Coliseum.

“I think he’ll fit in at J.C. Smith,” Spartans coach Andy Muse told the Journal. “Everything happened so fast last week and once he got his scholarship papers in front of him I think he started to second guess himself.”

Muse said Minor liked WSSU but thought leaving home would be a better situation.

“He felt like he could grow a little more over there at Johnson C. Smith,” Muse said. “I think he’ll do just fine there.”
