WINTHROP UNIVERSITY
Janiva Willis, founder of the Charlotte-based nonprofit I Dream in Colors was killed Tuesday in a car crash in Hudspeth County, Texas on Tuesday. Willis, who was biking across the U.S. to raise money and awareness for the mentoring program, was a passenger in a car struck by a tractor trailer. The car's driver, Jeffrey Turner, was also killed.

Janiva Willis died helping kids.

Willis, executive director of the Charlotte-based nonprofit I Dream in Colors, was killed Tuesday in Hudspeth County, Texas, during a cross-country bike tour to raise money for the mentoring program. According to the Texas Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 9 p.m. local time on westbound Interstate 10 in Hudspeth County about five miles west of Van Horn. Willis, 33, a Winthrop University graduate and former softball player, was riding in a car when it was struck by a tractor-trailer. The car's driver, Jeffrey Turner, was also killed.

"We are stunned by this tragic news. Janiva was such a vibrant and positive person to be around," Winthrop athletic director Tom Hickman said in a statement on the school's athletics web site. "She was so excited about the work she was doing to help mentor the youth in this area and was such a great role model.  We were eagerly awaiting her arrival back to Rock Hill following her journey. She certainly made her mark on both our softball program and the university. She will be missed."

Willis, a native of Irishtown, New Brunswick, Canada, was biking from San Diego, California, to Charlotte to raise money and awareness for the mentoring program.  The 3,174-mile trip started March 26. She was scheduled to arrive in Rock Hill on June 9 and then depart for Charlotte for the last leg of her journey on June 11.

“My friends were like ‘Wow Jay, that’s amazing,’ but they were looking at me like I was crazy,” she told The Post last month. “My mom is my biggest supporter and fan, so when I say I’m going to do something like that, she believed me from Day 1. She was like ‘Whatever you need done, I’m your biggest cheerleader.”

Willis was a four-time All-Big South softball player at Winthrop and was named NCAA South Carolina Woman of the Year in 2005 and was a finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year. She played on the Canadian national team in 2005 and 2007. In 2012, she was inducted into the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame.

A clinical social worker by training and profession, Willis stepped away from her work to launch I Dream in Colors, which provides positive life experiences, specifically to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or in need of additional academic and life support.

“It’s to give them hope and show them the importance of not just the kids but the community the importance of giving our time and our talent,” said Willis, who earned Winthrop degrees in 2005 and 2008. “We can help the youth reach their dreams for their future.”

Janiva and I met after my girlfriend passed in March of last year.

Our meeting was so divine, her and I agreed, as we fit so well as friends. She would text me, throughout the day, updating me on her 'grind', lol. I'd do the same. She was always, always, helping someone. She loved children. Jay wanted her idea to go global. For most individuals, you'd think they were crazy to basically, create a cross country biking trip as a fundraiser. Not Jay. I could feel her energy; being around her was like a spiritual high at church.

We loved chillin' at her place, or mine, watching Shark Tank episodes (she loved rotating between that and 'The Profit' lol). We'd lay on that sofa and talk business, life, goals, dreams well until 3am, when I'd trek back to Durham to make Sunday School. Jay was simply amazing. I marvelled her.

She was always worthy of respect and carried herself professionally. That was so attractive because she was also an athlete. She was well balanced.

She would make everything positive. One Saturday when it was my turn to visit, we went to the boardwalk. Jay loved that place! We'd literally sit there all day, exchanging secrets and delving deep into each other's lives. She was so compassionate, understanding and accepting. She was a social worker and true counselor, gifted by God.

I regret not being man enough to tell Jay I loved her. Perhaps in her death I'm just realizing it. Then again, she had to know. Women always do.

Life is truly short. God is truly sovereign. This hurts, for all who knew her, but I love God and accept his will. I don't understand it, but Jay was and is his creation.

But it kills me that two women that I loved, and in their unique way taught me it was okay to trust and love, in God's infinite wisdom, both have died.

Deborah became ill. But for Jay, to be hit by an 18-wheeler while carrying out her dream of helping children, this stings in an entirely different way.

Janiva was beautiful. We went to a Charlotte Knights game in May, or June and I just stared at her, with Charlotte's downtown skyline in the backdrop, for hours. The sun was just beaming down on her face, so beautifully. She was just smiling. She finally said: you like that, huh?

So cute!

For her family that said they hadn't talked with her, know that Jay shared a lot with me. She faced her personal demons head-on. We prayed and cried together. She was right with God and had gotten involved with a great body of Christ, so you can take absolute comfort knowing her soul was in order. Jay loved God.

God bless her beautiful, precious soul. Folks, never, take another minute for granted.

It touches my heart and spirit to read such heartfelt and loving comments about my cousin. We are first cousins on her Moms side. Ours was a small close knit family. My cousins and I all felt as if Janiva was our sister. We will continue to Live our Dreams in Colour, in her honour. Thank you for loving our Jay!

I didn't know Janiva but I know if Jeff was with her she had to have a beautiful heart and soul. I did however know Jeff, we rode the bus together in high school. He was a christian man, live, and so full of love. I use to say "Rudy" his nickname, sing me a song and he would jump at the opportunity. If you needed a good pick me up he always knew how to make you laugh. I'm so grieved at this tragedy but God called his angels home. They have done their job and he is pleased. I pray for Janiva's family and also for all of Jeff's family and friends. You will truly be missed my loves!

Difficult to understand how such a bright shining light can be taken away far before her time. My heart breaks for her family and friends. She has touched so many lives in a positive way and has left behind a legacy that I hope continues to grow. Janiva was one of a kind, genuine and just the most amazing person you could ever meet. Hard to believe that someone so wonderful was taken so soon. God bless you Jay. You will never be forgotten.

Coached Janiva in Soccer as a little girl. Knew her as as she grew. Great person, I read about her cross country trip and was proud of her. I went cold when I found out she had left us.

I didn't know Janiva but admire the work that she was doing I did however know Jeff ever since he was a little boy, we weren't blood cousins but grew up as though we were, he was such an amazing young man and touched the lives of many. He was always respectful and so full of hope I remember his last words to me when I saw him a couple weeks ago he was talking about this journey to do this cross country tour and the reasons he was doing it. I told him I look forward to seeing his post on FB and couldn't wait to hear about it once he returned. Little did I know that would be the last time I would see him. My heart breaks for his mom and my Aunt and cousins that were close to him. R.I.H. Jeff and Janiva to people who died doing what they loved that's helping others.

I went to high school with Janiva at Harrison Trimble in Moncton NB, truly a inspiring woman. She embraces what true Trojan spirit means. It saddens me this Trojan was taken away so soon, in the state I now live in too. Prayers and thoughts to her family and all those who's lives were touched by her.
