For the second straight year, Johnson C. Smith finished second in the NCAA Division II women’s track and field championship.

The Golden Bulls’ 59 points at Grand Valley State (Mich.) left JCSU five points short of Lincoln (Missouri), which clinched the championship by winning the 4 x 400 relay in the meet finale while JCSU finished third. The Golden Bulls’ 4 x 100 relay team was disqualified for an exchange zone violation, which proved to be the difference.

JCSU seniors Danielle Williams and Samantha Elliott closed their collegiate careers with a pair of wins each at Allendale, Mich. Williams cranked out season-best performances en route to wins in the 100 meters (11.55 seconds) and 200 meters (23.48) while Elliott won the 100 and 400 hurdles with times of 13.04 and 57.12, respectively. Williams took second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.05 while sophomore Tovea Jenkins (53.81) was fourth in the 400 meters.

Livingstone junior sprinter Quanera Hayes of Hope Mills, N.C. won the 400 for the second straight season with a clocking of 51.91 seconds. Hayes finished fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.70 to earn her ninth and 10th all-America awards for the Blue Bears, who finished 18th with 14 points.
