Men often complain about women’s shopping habits but a recent study found that while women shop more frequently, men spend twice as much.

The dating website SeekingMillionaire.com surveyed 10,406 men on their shopping habits and found that on average men spend 43 percent of their disposable income on fashion, while women report spending 22 percent.

What’s driving men to spend so much on designer clothes and watches? Brandon Wade, the website’s founder and CEO, said it could have something to do with well-dressed men attract more women.

“There’s an old saying that says: a well-tailored suit is like lingerie to a woman’s eyes,” Wade said. “Fashion sense is more than just color coordination and style. Women naturally associate fashion sense with a big wallet, which is an important factor when considering a potential partner.”

Charlotte-based clothier William Wilson said that when a woman pays a man a compliment on his clothing, the man is likely to pay attention.

“If a woman says she likes something he has on, you better believe he’s going to go out and get ten more,” said Wilson.

So which U.S. city has the best-dressed men? SeekingMillionaire.com polled 13,119 women across the nation, asking them to rate how well the men in their cities dressed. Chicago topped the list as the city with the most “fashion forward” men. New York came in eighth place, being beat out by Boston, Austin, Sand Francisco, Harford, Savannah and Providence, RI. Charlotte failed to make the top 10.

When it came to retail, the survey found that men distributed their clothing budget as follows:

Shoes – 26 percent

Shirts – 22 percent

Pants – 19 percent

Suits/formal wear – 7 percent

Accessories – 17 percent

Other – 9 percent
