THE AGENDA: Love, black history and lots of chocolate
Weekly events listing: Feb. 6-12
Published Thursday, February 6, 2014
It’s February – a time for celebrating love and black history. From stage plays and concerts to chocolate workshops and Sunday brunch, there are plenty of ways to commemorate Black History Month and get in the mood for love well before Valentine’s Day arrives. Here’s a glimpse at what’s happening around town in the days ahead:
On the Mountaintop – through March 2
The play that took Broadway by storm last year is at Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center through March 2. Taking place on April 3, 1968, "The Mountaintop" is a gripping re-imagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
After delivering one of his most memorable speeches, an exhausted Dr. King retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious young woman named Camae delivers room service, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people.
Stay afterward for free Talk Backs featuring show cast and creatives following select performances. This week, Steve Crump of WBTV is hosting a Talk Back Feb. 6. Tonya Rivens of Power 98 and WBTV is hosting Feb. 8, and Marcy C. Curtis is moderating the Feb. 11 Talk Back. For schedule and more information, visit BlumentalArts.org.
