WORSHIP BRIEFS: United in Jazz hosts live performance

Feb. 7     

United in Jazz, a new ministry at First United Presbyterian Church, is hosting a live performance by Willie Walker and the Conversation Piece at 7 p.m. Walker, the group’s founder, is the composer, arranger, and sideman for Tom Browne (“Funking for Jamaica”). He has also performed with musicians from Earth, Wind and Fire to Atlantic Starr. Tickets are $10. Enjoy a pre-concert dinner for an additional $10 per person.  First United Presbyterian Church is located at 406 N. Feb. 9

The New Beginnings Church invites the community to attend their 2014 Revival. The theme is “Greater Works.” The revival kicks off Sunday with R.A. Vernon, Senior Pastor of The Word Church and author of “Dr. R.A. Vernon’s 10 Rules of Dating.”

Vernon is also hosting a Singles Lecture series Feb. 10 and Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. each evening, followed by a revival service at 7 p.m. featuring contemporary gospel vocalist and evangelist, Beverly Crawford and the New Beginnings Voices Mass Choir. 

The revival continues on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. with renowned author and relationship expert, Ronn Elmore, who is hosting a “Weekend of Love”. Elmore will also be guest speaker during the 8:45 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Sunday worship services.

Feb. 15      

Join the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Ministry of Health and Wellness from 9 a.m. until noon for a free health extravaganza and expo featuring vendors, blood pressure checks, flu shots, cooking ideas, massages and more. The health expo will be held at the J.A. Cuthbertson Family Life Center, located at 517 Baldwin Avenue. Contact the church office at (704) 376-1201 for more information.

Later in the day, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church is hosting “The Heart of Truth,” a fashion show and dinner from 6-9 p.m. at Cuthbertson Family Life Center. Plus there will be a silent auction, raffles and door prizes. Contact Edna Sherer at (704) 975-7453 for tickets or more information.

Feb. 22

The Men's Ministry of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, located at 217 West Todd Lane, invites all men to attend the Annual Men's Health Symposium & Fair from 1:30-5 p.m. The following screenings will be provided: Lipid Panels (cholesterol), A1C (diabetes screening), Ht/Wt/BMI, and blood pressure. Feb. 23

In celebration of Black History Month, The Ministers Alliance of North Carolina, Inc. along with area pastors and community leaders are holding a commemorative service to honor the work of Pastors Mabel Lee Hubbard, Mary Cubean and Allique Lewis and reflect on each woman’s life and public service. The event will be held at Faith Memorial Baptist Church, 211 Lakewood Ave., starting at 4 p.m. with host pastor Dennis Williams.
