The holidays are all about tradition, and this week is no exception. As the Ballantyne Hotel gets its annual Gingerbread House Competition underway, Quentin Talley of On Q Productions is looking to start a new tradition with the debut performance of “A Soulful Noel” Friday night.
Saturday, it will be hard to tell who’s been naughty and who’s been nice as hundreds participate in 14th annual Santa Bar Crawl Uptown. From boat parades and toy drives to workshops on how to turn your trash into treasure, here’s a look at what’s happening around the Queen City:
Gingerbread Houses in Ballantyne 12/12
Take a stroll down Gingerbread Lane at the Ballantyne Hotel (10000 Ballantyne Commons Parkway). Over 40 gingerbread houses will be on display through Dec. 29 during the annual Gingerbread House Competition. Contestants will face off in two independent categories – professional and amateur. First place in each category will win a one-night stay in the Presidential Suite at the Ballantyne Hotel. Vote for your favorite gingerbread house with a minimum donation of $1 to Levine Children’s Hospital or simply visit for fun. It’s free.
A Soulful Noel 12/13
On Q Productions is presenting “A Soulful Noel,” for one night only - 8 p.m. Friday at The McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square (345 N. College St.) featuring Chirl Girl, Quentin Talley, Jermaine Nakia Lee, Aisha Dew, Sultan Omar El-Amin and other stars of the On Q Ensemble. This original three-act musical includes new holiday music and timeless classics such as “The Night before Christmas,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and “Go Tell it On the Mountain.” Tickets are $15 or $40 for a family of four in advance and $20 night of show. Santa Claus Bar Crawl 12/14
Hundreds of Charlotteans will don their favorite Santa hats and most festive holiday sweaters while going on a bar hopping-excursion through Uptown during the 14th annual Santa Bar Crawl. Howl at the Moon, Suite at Epicentre, SIP Charlotte, Strike City, Tilt on Trade, Tin Roof and BlackFinn are just a few of the establishments participating in this event, which had over 850 crawlers last year. Crawlers receive drink specials and free entry to participating bars and clubs all night with no waiting in line. Tickets are $14 in advance and $20 day of event. Lighted Boat Parade 12/14
Watch the Lighted Boat Parade from the boardwalk or back lawn of the Peninsula Yacht Club (18501 Harbor Light Blvd.) in Cornelius. The parade begins at 6 p.m. and features holiday-decorated boats and a fireboat carrying Santa Claus. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Concessions will be sold. Carolina Chocolate Drops 12/14 - 15
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are playing this weekend Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 day of show. The show begins at 8 p.m. both nights. Visit www.neighborhoodtheatre.com for more information.
Praise Is What I Do 12/15
Power 98 presents “Praise is what I Do,” a multi-cultural praise dance and mime showcase, at Halton Theater (1206 Elizabeth Ave.) with featured artist, Jazz artist Adrian Crutchfield. The show begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available at www.tix.cpcc.edu. Vendors will be set up at the event for holiday shopping.
Marines Toys for Tots 12/16
Stop by Napa on Providence (110 Perrin Place) Monday between 5:30 and 10 p.m. to make a donation and help a child during the Marines' Toys for Tots toy drive. $20 VIP tickets include complimentary wine and beer with chef-created appetizers and live music.
Holiday Remixer 12/ 17
Learn to turn your trash into treasure and make funky accessories from things you already have around the house at the Holiday Remixer, Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. at Dupp & Swat, 2424 N.
