Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. will spend the next 30 months in a federal prison in North Carolina after his conviction on federal election law violations.

Jackson, an Illinois Democrat, reported to the facility at Butner on Monday, accompanied by former colleague U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) and Atlanta attorney C.K. Hoffler. Jackson, 48 and son of civil rights activist the Rev. Jesse Jackson, was convicted in August and sentenced to 30 months for illegally spending $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items. His wife Sandra Jackson, a former Chicago alderman, was sentenced to one year for filing false joint federal income tax returns.

“Congressman Jackson and I have been good friends for many years and I am happy to report that he is in good spirits, all things considered,” Butterfield said in a statement.

Hoffler will coordinate visits for Jackson, which may begin as early as Nov. 8 with the arrival of Jackson’s family as well nationally known spiritual leaders Rick Warren and Anthony Miller from California.  Rev. Otis Moss Jr. from Cleveland and Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan. U.S. Reps. Marsha Fudge, chairman of Congressional Black Caucus, and Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) are also expected to visit.

Upon surrendering to federal custody, Jackson apologized and expressed regret for his actions, which derailed a once-promising political career.

“Jesse asked that his heartfelt thanks be extended again to all of those whose prayers and kindness towards him and his family have helped him through this extraordinarily difficult time,” Hoffler said.  “His only wish is that a community of love continues to embrace his family and his children, in particular.”

To correspond with Jackson, his mailing address is:

Jesse L. Jackson Jr. Reg. No. 32451-016, FCI Butner Medium I Satellite Camp, P.O. Box 1000 Butner, NC 27509
