Discovery Place was named the third most visited museum and historic attraction in North Carolina during 2012, according to an annual survey released by Carolina Publishing Associates.

For the third year in a row, the organization also ranked as the most visited museum and historic attraction in the Charlotte region.

“Hands-on science centers as educational resources are critical to our future and encourage children to discover science, technology, engineering and math,” said John Mackay, president and CEO at Discovery Place. “The breadth and depth of what Discovery Place does encompasses exhibits, shows, programming, lab activities, outreach initiatives, professional development, and more. These exciting and immersive experiences keep educators, professionals and guests of all ages engaged with relevant and current science.”

Visited by 762,261 guests in 2012, Discovery Place’s attendance included visitation to Discovery Place, Charlotte Nature Museum and Discovery Place Kids–Huntersville.

A 2012 highlight for Discovery Place was the exhibit “Mummies of the World: The Exhibition,” which welcomed 141,160 visitors between Nov. 11, 2011–April 8, 2012, including 6,708 guests in its final weekend.

The Top 30 North Carolina museums and historic attractions survey is conducted each year by Carolina Publishing Associates, the Matthews-based publisher of the annual Carolina Heritage Guide, Carolina Field Trips Magazine and the African American Heritage and Visitor’s Guide.
