Cooksey won't run for City Council
3-term Republican opposed stimulus, tax hike

There’ll be a change in City Council District 7’s representation.

Republican Warren Cooksey has decided not to run for re-election after six years on the council, bringing the number of open seats on the panel to three. Fellow Republican Andy Dulin, who represents District 6, isn't running for another term. Democrat James Mitchell, who represents District 2, is running for mayor.

“It has been a privilege to serve the City of Charlotte as the Council Member for District 7 for three terms,” Cooksey said in a statement. “However, it’s time to let the voters choose someone else to have that opportunity. It’s good to have a sense of balance in life, and I need to focus on personal and professional goals for a while.”

Cooksey, who was first elected in 2007, is one of two Republicans on the 11-member council and arguably the panel’s most conservative member. He opposed stimulus funding from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and was part of a bipartisan coalition that stalled a capital improvement plan for nearly a year before a program was approved in May. A major sticking point was funding of the CityLynx Gold Line, which would connect neighborhoods in east and west Charlotte. He voted against the 2013-14 budget, which included a 7.25 percent property tax hike.

Cooksey was also a facilitator in the debate over whether the Ballantyne area he represents should secede from Charlotte, hosted a meeting of the Ballantyne Breakfast Club to explain the specific tasks involved with the incorporation of a new municipality.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed advocating conservative approaches to city issues,” Cooksey said. “I hope the next council member from District 7 also seeks to work with other council members to do what is best for all of Charlotte.”
