Poll: Cotham doing good job
Survey reveals support for Jones' ouster

Mecklenburg County commissioners Chair Pat Cotham gets a thumbs-up from voters, who also agree with the boardís firing of county manager Harry Jones last week, a poll finds.

Mecklenburg voters approve of the job Cotham is doing, according to a poll conducted by Public Policy Polling. Voters also back last week's firing of county manager Harry Jones, according to the survey.


A Public Policy Polling survey of Mecklenburg voters for the Pat Cotham Committee reveals that 46 percent approve of the job she is doing to just 26 percent who disapprove. Democrats approve by a 50 percent to 23 margin while independents favor Cothamís performance by 43-29 spread. Forty-two percent of Republicans approve compared to 28 percent who donít. Cotham has solid personal favorability numbers as well at 42/25.


More than half of respondents (54 percent) back the commissionersí decision to fire Jones compared 30 percent who disagree.
Voters are also in favor of Cothamís vision of commissionersí exercising more oversight of top county administrators by a 54 percent to 14 percent margin. Sixty-six percent of respondents back Cothamís contention that government should be more efficient and responsive to constituents versus 12 percent who disagree.


PPP interviewed 574 likely 2014 voters on May 14-15 with a margin of error of 4.1 percent.
