Eagan named social services chief
New director oversees $161.3 million agency

Peggy Eagan has been named director of Mecklenburg County’s Department of Social Services.

Eagan, executive director at the nonprofit Children & Family Services Center in Charlotte, will oversee Mecklenburg’s public assistance programs such as SNAP (commonly referred to as food stamps), senior assistance and child protection. She starts work on June 17.

“We are pleased to have Peggy Eagan as part of our organization,” interim county manager Bobbie Shields said in a statement. “As a certified social worker, she understands the importance of the social work profession and the impact social workers make in the lives of the people they serve.

“Peggy also has been building and sustaining positive human services partnerships in our community for nearly two decades, and her exemplary work on behalf of those in need in this community is widely recognized by many human service agencies and professionals.”

Eagan will also be charged with reshaping the human services organization. DSS has been without a director since September when Mary Wilson was fired by then-county manager Harry Jones. Wilson was criticized for a lack of oversight of the agency as well as hiring spouses and children of high-profile political leaders. Jones was fired earlier this month after a series of missteps in his handling of the county bureaucracy, including the Wilson firing and DSS oversight.

Eagan will oversee an annual budget of $161.3 million and a workforce of 1,200 employees.
