Mecklenburg County’s executive leadership has been reorganized.

Interim County Manager Bobbie Shields has promoted Dena Diorio to assistant county manager for fiscal control, policies and standards compliance and added her to the executive management team. Diorio, who was finance director, joins John McGillicuddy and Michelle Lancaster-Sandlin as assistant county managers. Shields, promoted to the top position after county commissioners fired Harry Jones last week, changed the general manager title to assistant county manager to clarify the positions’ roles.

“We have talented and dedicated employees throughout our organization,” Shields said in a statement. “This reorganization reflects and recognizes Dena’s expertise and sustained high performance, while strengthening our long-term management capabilities to achieve the board’s goals for the community.”

Diorio, who will remain finance officer, will oversee Mecklenburg’s Financial Services Department, which includes the tax collector and assessor’s offices. The assessor's office was criticized by a botched property evaluation in 2011, which led to the assessor's resignation and a review of county policy.

Diorio will work with Deputy County Attorney/Chief Compliance Officer Tyrone Wade in developing and implementing strategies for fiscal controls, policies and standards. Wanda Reevesserving was named interim financial services director.

Shields also named Associate General Manager Leslie Johnsonas interim assistant county manager to take on the duties Shields had before his promotion from general manager. Johnson will oversee the Land Use & Environmental Services Agency, Park and Recreation Department, Economic Development Office and Historical Landmarks Commission. The human resources director will also report directly to Shields.
