SALISBURY – Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, nominated this week to become the next Secretary of Transportation, will deliver the Commencement address at Livingstone College on Saturday. Commencement begins at 10 a.m. in Alumni Memorial Stadium.

If confirmed, Mayor Foxx will replace outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and become the second African-American in President Barack Obama’s cabinet.

Livingstone President Jimmy R. Jenkins said he asked Foxx to be the college’s 131st Commencement speaker because Foxx is an excellent role model and has defied the odds. Despite growing up in a single-parent household, Foxx, a West Charlotte High School and Davidson College graduate, earned a law degree from New York University’s School of Law as a Root-Tilden Scholar, the university’s public service scholarship.

“Mayor Foxx is an outstanding young man who proves your circumstances in life don’t have to dictate whether you are successful,” Jenkins said. “Despite being raised in a single-parent home, he has accomplished some extraordinary things and is obviously headed for even higher achievements.

Foxx has been mayor of Charlotte since 2009 and served as an at-large representative of the Charlotte City Council before becoming the top office holder. During his first term as mayor he led a citywide push to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Charlotte was awarded the contract to host the convention, which pumped millions of dollars into the city’s economy.

“Mayor Foxx is exactly the type of speaker our graduates need – a man who set lofty goals and worked diligently to achieve them,” Jenkins said. “He has served the city of Charlotte well, and, if confirmed, I have no doubt will serve the United States well as transportation secretary.”
