A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg teacher is the school boards new chair.

Mary McCray, a Democrat won unanimous election to the position at the Dec. 11 board meeting. Tim Morgan, a registered Republican was unanimously elected vice-chair. Both at at-large representatives.

McCray succeeds at-large representative Ericka Ellis-Stewart, who declined nomination as vice chair, citing the time required to chair the board. Ellis-Stewart nominated McCray.

Id like to thank Ericka Ellis-Stewart for her leadership, said CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison, who was hired earlier this year by the board Ellis-Stewart chaired. I appreciate very much her support for me in her role as chair.

McCray, who was elected to the board in 2011, spent 34 years in the classroom, including 24 in CMS. After a decade in Union County, she taught at Collinswood, Morehead, Piney Grove and Endhaven elementary schools in addition to Community House Middle. McCray, a High Point native and N.C. A&T State University graduate, was also the first full-time president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators.

Morgan, an Independence High School graduate, was first elected to the board in 2009 as District 6s representative and was elected at large in 2011. Morgan previously served on the Citizens Capital Budget Advisory Committee and the School Building Solutions Committee.
