DURHAM – N.C. NAACP President William Barber has one question for Governor-elect Pat McCrory: “What kind of Republican will you be?”

Barber said the NAACP has deep concerns on whether McCrory will roll back voting rights, voter registration and repeal Obamacare. McCrory is the first Republican elected governor of North Carolina in 20 years.

“We are calling on Governor McCrory to resist that. We hope he won’t close his door to those who are poor. We will not go backwards for what is just and right and what is fair,” said Barber at a press conference last weekend in Durham to renew their request for McCrory to meet with the NAACP before he takes office in January.

Barber wants McCrory to speak to them at their next scheduled NAACP delegation meeting to discuss civil rights and issued a challenge to McCrory to “govern for the good of the whole.”

“The civil and human rights community is more than willing to work with Governor-elect McCrory and the N.C. General Assembly leadership in ways that will advance civil rights and justice,” he said. “We too believe in reform, equal rights for all people.

“We have always challenged our elected officials, be they Democrat or Republican, to lift our state from the bottom and govern as our state’s Constitution demands.”

Barber said he is deeply concerned about McCrory placing Art Pope, a Raleigh businessman and “ultra–conservative” in an advisory position for his transition team, citing Pope’s stance on Obamacare.

“He will be regressive to North Carolina,” he said.
