If polls are any indication, North Carolina is still in play for President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

A poll commissioned by Democratic-leaning Project New America found Obama leading Romney 47 percent to 44 percent among likely voters. The survey of 500 respondents across the state was conducted for Denver, Colo.-based PNA by Grove Insight on Oct. 17-18 and has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Among African Americans, Obama leads Romney 92 percent to 7 percent, while the incumbent is in front among N.C. women (49 percent to 43) and tied at 46 percent among men.

The PNA poll contradicts surveys conducted by Rasmussen Reports, a Republican-leaning firm, and Public Policy Polling, a Democratic-leaning company in Raleigh. Rasmussen’s poll of 500 voters conducted Oct. 17 showed Romney with a 52-46 percent advantage, while PPP’s survey of 1,04 voters from Oct. 12-14 found Romney leading 49 percent to 47 for Obama. Rasmussen’s margin of error was 4.5 percent; PPP’s is 3 percent.
