Project LIFT officials are hosting three community forums on whether the specialized public school zone should go to a year-round academic calendar.

The meetings, which start Oct. 4 at Walter G. Byers School, 1415 Hamilton St., are to give families and residents in the Project LIFT zone the opportunity to learn more about year-round schools and use the feedback to guide the zone’s decision-making regarding a proposed change.
Meetings will also be held Oct. 11 at West Charlotte High School, 2219 Senior Drive and Thomasboro Academy, 538 Bradford Drive. All forums start at 6 p.m.

Earlier this year, N.C. lawmakers approved calendar flexibility for Project LIFT, which the zone is considering using for the 2013-14 academic calendar. The change is being considered as a part of CMS strategy to increase student performance among low-income and minority students.

“Research suggests that operating schools on year-round can impact academic performance, particularly in reading for cognitively and economically disadvantaged students,” Project LIFT zone superintendent Denise Watts said. “In addition, it has been demonstrated that extending the school year can be an effective way to support student learning, particularly for students most at risk of school failure and when considerations are made for how time is used.”

Project LIFT – Leadership and Investment for Transformation – officials will share research on education concepts and the year-round calendar as well as give parents the chance to weigh in during the forums.
