A freshman student at Johnson C. Smith University was shot in the leg around 3 a.m. Monday morning as she returned to the campus located on Beatties Ford Road on a party bus sponsored by a Charlotte nightclub.
The student, who was not identified, sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to a statement released by the university.
“While I regret that the student was harmed, I am grateful that it was non-life threatening,” said JCSU President Ronald Carter. “I have repeatedly expressed to our students that they should not board club sponsored buses as the organizers do not have their best interests at heart. I hope that this incident will remind our students to always keep their personal safety at the forefront of their minds.”
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said witnesses reported there was an altercation that occurred at a club, which apparently led the suspect to follow the bus as it stopped at Campus Street and Beatties Ford Road.
A suspect in a green Jeep fired shots at the bus when the student was struck. However she was apparently not part of the altercation.
