James E. Ferguson II, who helped Julius Chambers launch the first integrated law firm in North Carolina in the 1960s, continues his battle for justice today as leader of the firm now known as Ferguson Chambers & Sumter.

“I just want to feel that I’ve done all I can do to bring about equality – for everybody,” Ferguson said. “That’s what life is about – trying to create the society we think we want.”

“I decided the place for me is community college because that’s where you can do the most for the disenfranchised,” Zeiss said. “They just need a hand up.” For his part, Zeiss said he lives to see people succeed. “The most gratifying part of what I do is looking at the hope and pride in our students’ eyes when they come across that stage to collect their degree or certificate,” he said.
