Johnson C. Smith’s home volleyball debut broke a long streak of futility.

Last week’s 3-2 win against Saint Augustine’s in a round-robin tournament at Brayboy Gym snapped a 27-match winless streak that began in 2011. The victory was JCSU’s (1-6) first home win since Oct. 16, 2010.

“(The) win at home is a symbol of rebirth in a sense,” said Golden Bulls coach Mark Raley, who returned to the program after a nine-year separation. “This is my first season back with the volleyball team at Johnson C. Smith University and I’m confident that a quality program is being established.”

• Livingstone’s Dorian Edwards, Rufonda Moss, and Drew Powell earned CIAA player of the week honors.

Edwards, a senior from Kinston, was named defensive lineman of the week after 11 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, blocked extra point attempt, and two quarterback hurries against Lincoln.

Moss, a sophomore, was named defensive back of the week with recorded 13 tackles, and a forced fumble against Lincoln.
Powell, a freshman, was named rookie of the week for the fourth time in the row after hitting 21-of-36 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Powell leads the CIAA in passing touchdowns with 12 and is 10th in NCAA Division II in total offense with 1,330 yards.
• Saint Augustine’s football is on the radar in a national poll.

The Falcons received eight votes in the AFCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll for the second consecutive week and the third time in four weeks the Falcons have appeared in the receiving votes category.

The Falcons earned 21 votes in the boxtorow.com HBCU top 10 poll and are ranked 12th in the Renaissance Foundation Power Ratings.
St. Aug’s, which beat Bowie State 38-22 last week, takes on Elizabeth City State in Rocky Mount for the Down East Viking Classic on Sept. 29.
