Charlotte will be home to a Major League Lacrosse franchise next year.

MLL Commissioner David Gross made the announcement Monday along with the addition of a Columbus, Ohio franchise. The expansion will bring MLL’s membership to eight teams, with franchises in Boston, Chesapeake, Va., Denver, Colo., Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; Long Island and Rochester, N.Y.

Major League Lacrosse is adding a franchise in Charlotte for 2012, giving the league eight teams.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Charlotte and the Carolinas into the MLL,” Gross said. “The sport of lacrosse is growing rapidly in Charlotte and throughout the region.  That growth combined with a strong local ownership group and an experienced local sports management team, made Charlotte a prime target for our expansion.“

Charlotte sports management executive Jim McPhilliamy led the efforts to recruit the franchise  and will oversee its operations.
“Charlotte has been my family’s home for eight years now,” McPhilliamy said, “and we love it.  I’m glad to play a part in bringing something as fun and exciting as Major League Lacrosse to town.  I hope it contributes in some small way to making Charlotte a better place to live and to raise a family.”

Lacrosse has established a relatively small but growing following in the South as transplants from the Northeast have established youth club teams throughout the region. Independent high schools such as Charlotte Country Day and Charlotte Latin have established programs and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association sponsored public school championships for the first time in 2010.

The Charlotte team is negotiating with Mecklenburg Park and Recreation to play home games at Memorial Stadium. It also has social network pages on Facebook (www.facebook.com/CharlotteMLL) and Twitter (@CharlotteMLL).  Fans may submit suggestions for the team’s name and colors on Facebook.
