“When I received the email indicating I was the head coach for the men’s team, I was surprised and honored,” said Lawson, who has been NCCU's coach for 20 years. “I am looking forward to introducing these athletes to international competition.”
Lawson in no stranger to NACAC competition. In 2008, he was assistant sprint coach for the U.S. men’s and women’s teams when the championships were held in Mexico.
“The USATF NACAC competition is a key program for future USA Olympians,” said Lawson.
The three-day competition will feature athletes from 32 countries competing in seven sprints and distance events, three hurdle races, four jumping events and four throwing events.
“This is going to be a challenge, and I am looking forward,” Lawson said. “My goals for this competition are simple, improve my coaching, be a good supporter to the athletes, win medals and represent myself and NCCU with pride.”
During Lawson’s tenure at NCCU, the Eagles have earned 65 NCAA All-America citations and 10 NCAA individual national championships. Central's relay squads have earned All-America honors 24 times, including the 2002 national title.
