The Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund will grant 103 college scholarships at its 30th annual awards ceremony on July 28.

The recipients will receive over $165,000 in scholarships at the ceremony to be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2020 West Sugar Creek Road from 4:15-6 p.m. Merit Awards will be presented to selected students for outstanding academic achievement and a recipient will be honored as student of the year. An additional 22 special recognition scholarships will be awarded and seven members of the college class of 2013 will be recognized. Finally, Central Piedmont Community College will be recognized by the CHASF Alumni Association with their Trailblazer Award for outstanding service to youth in Mecklenburg County.

The CHASF provides financial assistance for students who live in subsidized housing subsidized. It is designed to inspire them to work toward becoming independent, self-reliant citizens of the community, by lending a helping hand.

“When I envisioned this scholarship 30 years ago, one of my personal goals was to support 100 students annually in perpetuity, CHASF founder John T. Crawford said in a statement.  “Proudly, we have surpassed that milestone during our 30th anniversary and our supporters are working harder than ever to continue the growth of the fund.”

Since its launch in 1983, more than 600 students have earned scholarships and attended 67 different colleges, universities and trade schools across the country.

Recipients complete a competitive application process and participate in panel interviews before being selected. They are required to attend summer workshops in preparation for their education and are eligible to receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $3,400.
After the ceremony, a reception will be held for everyone in attendance.
