Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx is a step away from confirmation as U.S. transportation secretary.
The Senate Commerce Committee unanimously voted to send Foxx’s nomination to the full Senate for a vote, where observers expect easy confirmation. President Barack Obama nominated Foxx last month.
“I am pleased that the Commerce Committee has approved Anthony Foxx’s nomination with unanimous bipartisan support,” U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) said in a statement. “Mayor Foxx has been a true champion of transportation and infrastructure development, making forward-looking investments in Charlotte’s roads, airport and mass transit. Anthony has a proven record of success, and while he will be missed in North Carolina, the entire country will benefit from his leadership at the Transportation Department.”
The committee’s ranking Republican, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, announced last week he’d support Foxx’s nomination as well as Penny Pritzker for commerce secretary. Pritzker is a Chicago businesswoman and major Democratic fundraiser.
