Charlotte’s medical professionals are honoring the legacies of some of the city’s best-known doctors on Nov. 10.

The Charlotte Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Society will host the Lifetime Achievement Scholarship Award Gala at The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte. The formal event will start at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $125.

The society will honor the legacies of the late Drs. Reginald Hawkins and Emery Rann, as well as emeritus member Dr. Charles James. Hawkins, who died in 2002, was a dentist, minister and civil rights leader. Rann, who died in 1996, was the first black physician accepted into the Mecklenburg County Medical Society in the mid-1950s.

“The 2012 Lifetime Achievement Scholarship Award Gala will be a memorable event for both the CMDPS and Charlotte, because it will enable us to embrace our history as an organization as we continue to make strides within the community,” CMDPS President Dr. Keia V.R. Hewitt said.
CMDPS, founded in 1900 by black doctors, is charged with increasing health awareness and outcomes in high-risk populations. The fundraiser supports the CMDPS Endowment, which provides scholarships for Johnson C. Smith University students pursuing careers in the health professions.

The gala, which begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:15 p.m. and dancing with music by Divided by Four.
