A documentary on one of the planet’s worst man-made disasters is showing at Johnson C. Smith University.

A screening of “Into the Niger Delta” will be shown at Biddle Auditorium on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. The documentary highlights the effects of major oil spills on Nigeria’s delta region and has been shown at colleges across the U.S. The country is one of the world’s largest oil exporters, with over 40 percent of production going to the United States. Almost all of Nigeria’s oil reserves are concentrated around the Niger River delta, which has been fouled by an estimated 1.5 million tons of oil over the last half-century – 50 times the pollution from the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska.

As a result, well water in the area is tainted with benzene, a cancer-causing chemical that exceeds World Health Organization guidelines by more than 900 times normal levels. Fishing and the delta’s ecosystem have been all but wiped out due to spills and gas flares from open oil wells have been linked to acid rain and air pollution. Millions of people have been displaced by the pollution and violence has broken out as Nigerian civilians fight each other and the government for control of the delta.

The screening is free, but registration is necessary at www.blacknovemberthemovement.com.
