People of Note: Byron Whatley
Financial services rep hired by The Principal

• Byron E. Whatley II has joined Principal Financial Group’s North Carolina Business Center. Whatley will serve as financial services representative.


Whatley has more than two years of experience in the insurance and financial services industry, most recently serving as a financial representative at MetLife.


Lee C. Ferguson, LUTCF has been accepted into The Principal Financial Group’s Emerging Leaders Program. The selective program is for high-achieving financial representatives who want to pursue formal leadership opportunities while maintaining their financial practices. 


Through coaching and a structured development plan, program participants experience different aspects of a management career, including recruiting, driving productivity, team work and mentoring. 


• James Means II has been appointed director of sales and marketing for Hampton Inn & Suites Piedmont Hotel Group southeast region.
Means, a Spartanburg, S.C., native previously held mid- to senior-level positions at Continental Tire North America, Michelin Tire Co., Bank of America and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. He will be responsible for the sales strategy and marketing initiatives for Hampton Inn & Suites in Greenville and Spartanburg.


• Russell Clark will be inducted into the UNC Pembroke Sports Hall of Fame.
Clark, a 1986 graduate, was a high jumper on the track and field team and qualified for the 1988 Olympic trials. He will be presented at UNCP’s Alumni Awards Dinner on Oct. 26 in Pembroke.
