Kiss & Tell: Even the Trollops of Dilworth have issues
Some women don't want to be a Mrs. but prefer to be the mistress

It’s about 3 p.m. on a Monday afternoon. I’m in my office starring at my computer trying my best to finish an article I’m working on, but I just can’t seem to focus so I decide to call up a friend and head over to Starbucks in Dilworth for a caffeinated pick me up.

When I arrive, I find my friend Lisa in the parking lot arguing with a tow truck driver. Apparently he had attempted to boot and tow her car. She’s cursing and calling him all kinds of nasty names. I think she wants to kill him. You see, Lisa is known for packing heat and being eager to use it. Today, she’s got a big, big purse so I know what’s inside.

The tow truck guy jumps in his truck and drives off. We go inside and order coffee.

I’ve always known that Lisa is hot tempered, but today she is in rare form.

“What’s up with you today?” I ask as we grab a seat on the patio.

“Me and Eric broke up,” she says. I feel bad. She and Eric have been dating for four years, and I know that she is head over heels in love with him.

“What happened?” I ask.

“I just ran into him with his wife across the street at the Outback,” she says.

My heart drops.

“Did you know he was married?”

“Yeah, I knew he was married. He’s been married for 11 years,” she says matter of factly. “But what I didn’t know was that his wife was pregnant. I can’t stand a lying man.”

I find it odd that she says that because she knew the man was married, and for at least the past four years he’s been cheating his wife with her.

“All cheaters are liars,” I say. “If he’s been sleeping with you for the past four years, then obviously he’s been lying, at least to his wife.”

“That’s the thing,” she says, taking a sip of coffee. “He told me that they had an open relationship and that she knew he was seeing other people.

“Their marriage is basically just a business arrangement,” she continues. “They only hooked up that one time, and she got pregnant. She probably did it on purpose. I just can’t believe he’s been lying to me all of this time. From the looks of her belly, she’s at least six months pregnant. He should have been honest and told me sooner instead of letting me find out like this.”

“And you really believe he’s telling you the truth when he tells you that they only hooked up that one time?” I ask.

“You think he lied about that too?” she asks as if the thought had never crossed her mind.

Always a mistress, never a Mrs.

Robin Marshall only likes to date men who are married or in committed relationships with other women.

“That way you don’t have to worry about getting hurt,” she explains. “It’s safer when you already know from the beginning where you stand.”

She says being the other woman definitely has its perks. For starters, she says that because men tend to compartmentalize their lives, they don’t bring all the baggage from their “real lives” into their side relationships.

“You are a part of their fantasy world and are only exposed to the best side of them,” she explains. “While the wives are at home cleaning their dirty drawers, doing the dishes, cooking and cleaning, you are laid up with him somewhere in a hotel outside of town, doing freaky things and ordering room service.

“And because every man fantasizes about being rich and powerful, he’ll never admit to you that he’s broke. He’ll pay your bills, buy you gifts, take you places even when he knows that he can’t afford it,” she says.

She says the best part is being the other woman allows you to have the comforts of a relationship while still allowing you to maintain your freedom as a single woman.

“You both know that he doesn’t want to wife you,” she says. “Neither of you owes the other anything. You can pretty much do as you please as long as you follow two simple rules.”

The first rule, she says, is to make him feel like he’s the only man in the world whenever you are together. The second is making sure that you don’t do anything that is going to bring drama to his “real life” or disrupt his family.

The chickens came home to roost

“That’s how that how situation with P.B. became so scandalous,” she says. “She broke the rules. Not only did she disrupt his home life, she also cost him his job. She really brought that man down, and the only thing she seemed concerned about was the fact that she had to cancel her big birthday bash in D.C.”

P.B. is one of Robin’s neighbors. She lives around the corner from her on Mt. Vernon Avenue in a five-bedroom home with her husband and two children.

“Everybody thought she was so prim and proper,” Robin says. “She was always raising money for various causes and rubbing elbows not only with the bigwigs around Charlotte, but in Raleigh and Washington, D.C. as well. But I knew something was up with her. Nobody’s life is that perfect.”

P.B. made national headlines after it was exposed that she was having an affair with a high-ranking government official who is 20 years her senior. Their dirty secret was revealed after she sent a series of harassing emails to a woman that she accused him of sleeping with.

“How are you going to have the nerve to check another woman for sleeping with a man that belongs to someone else,” Robin asks. “She forgot her place in the whole situation.”

Robin says when the news broke she was out of town, and had no idea what happened until she returned to find a hoards of reporters and photographers staking out their neighborhood.

“You couldn’t even walk your dog in peace,” she says. “There was media everywhere asking everyone on our block all kinds of questions like did we know her or did our kids go to school with her two sons. At first I had no clue who they were talking about until one reporter asked me if I’d ever seen her out jogging.

“I would always see her jogging. You couldn’t miss her. She is 40, but she has the body of a 20-year-old and she had no shame about showing it off. She would run in just a sports bra and the skimpiest Spandex shorts she could find.”

Still, Robin insists she didn’t tell reporters any of that.

“It was none of my business,” she says. “It’s just a shame how ugly the situation got for both of their families. I’m sure it was a big embarrassment for their spouses and their children.”

Robin takes a beat, then continues. “You know what else was ugly and embarrassing? That man’s wife,” she says answering her own question before I can guess.

“If she stays with him, I hope she learns her lesson. She’s got to do better,” says Robin. “I don’t care how old you are, if you don’t keep yourself together, then don’t be surprised when your man cheats on you with a woman like P.B. or a woman like me.”
