We celebrated Father's Day this past Sunday.
For some, it was a day of showing fathers, grandfathers and husbands how much we appreciate them for being in our lives. For others, it was a sobering reminder they were never there.
According to statistics, the majority of African-American children grow up in households without a father, and a group of Charlotte filmmakers say they are on a mission to do something about it.
Next Father's Day, director Narcel Reedus and producers Charles Easley, Angela Washington and Arritta Pruitt plan to release "One Day in June." The independent film is about a father’s journey to find and reconnect with the children he abandoned.
“We are committed to changing the perception of fathers particularly in the African-American community by showing a man stepping up to establish an ongoing relationship with his kids”, said Easley. “This is going to be more just a than a movie. This is a movement.”
The filmmakers plan to begin production later this year and have set up office space at the Garage at Packard Place, a small business hub for entrepreneurship and innovation in Uptown Charlotte.
They are currently seeking funding for the film and will hold a “One Day in June Fundraiser Launch Party & Transmedia Storytelling Experience” at their office June 21 at 6 p.m.
The event will feature video trailers from the movie and a live performance by actors. The audience will be invited to ad-lib in a scene with actors giving the fundraiser a unique blend of film and theatre.
“The Transmedia storytelling experience will bring you directly into the narrative of the story”, said Reedus. “This event will give the audience the ability to interact with actors and contribute dialogue to the movie.”
