Memorial Day weekend is approaching, which means it is the unofficial start of summer. This week put on your favorite white ensemble and usher in the new season with a host of parties, mixers and concerts. From old school R&B to new school gospel, here’s a look at what’s happening around Charlotte in the week ahead:

CAABJ Mixer @ Osso May 23
The Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalist is hosting a free mixer at Osso Restaurant (1000 NC Music Factory Boulevard) from 5 – 8 p.m.
It’s the perfect opportunity for those in media to take a break from sweeps and network with fellow journalists. It is also a great opportunity for those who are not in media to meet their favorite print journalists and television news personalities. Attendees can also enter to win free registration to the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Orlando in July.

Food Lion Speed Street May 23
Thursday night is R&B Night at Food Lion Speed Street. Performances begin at 6 p.m. with Charlotte’s own Prodigy 3T taking to the stage. Sol Fusion performs at 7:30 p.m.

Headliners Jon B. and SWV will perform at 8:45 and 9:45 p.m., respectively.

Nearly 400,000 people are expected to attend the Speed Street festival, which runs through May 25. The three-day festival, a precursor to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, includes live entertainment, NASCAR appearances, family fun and interactive displays. All musical performances will take place on the Coca-Cola stage located on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Brevard and Caldwell streets at the NASCAR Hall of Fame entrance.

Joyfest at Carowinds May 25
Gospel greats Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, Lecrae, Le’Andria Johnson, Isaac Carree, Humble Tip, Bone Hampton and Angela Cleveland are performing at this year’s Joyfest Saturday at Carowinds. Doors open at 3 p.m., and the festival will end approximately at 10:30 p.m. For tickets and complete schedule, visit joyfest.org.

Memorial Day Weekend Bar Crawl May 25
Dynasty 5, King Entertainment, RoundTable Entertainment and Sol Kitchen present their Annual Memorial Day Weekend Bar Crawl with music by DJ Ngenius, DJ 360 and DJ Paradime. The crawl includes stops at Phoenix (6 - 8 p.m.); Cosmos (8 - 10 p.m.) and RE:Public (10 p.m.-2 a.m.).

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.barcrawl2013.eventbrite.com.

Pre-Memorial Day Party May 26
Keep the Memorial Day weekend festivities going Sunday night at 505E Restaurant & Lounge (505 East 6th St). Doors open at 9 p.m. Music by DJ CK. Dress code is enforced so keep it trendy. No athletic wear or ball caps allowed. Drink specials all night. General admission $10. VIP $20.

Call (704) 817-9373 for more information.

First night in White at Tempo May 26

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer so it’s fashionably acceptable to wear white from now until Labor Day. V101.9’s Chirl Girl is hosting a white party at Tempo (4809 Wilkinson Blvd). Enjoy two full bars, live music, an outdoor patio and over 9,300 square feet of fun. Advanced tickets available at offers.cbslocal.com.

Charlotte’s Favorite Happy Hour May 29
Herb and Felicia Gray are hosting a night of networking and fun at Ruth’s Chris in SouthPark (6000 Fairview Road) from 5:30-9:30 p.m. The evening will feature a wine tasting by Fine Wine Trading, a cigar bar provided by Outland Cigars and music by 5th & York.

The event is free.
