The first day of class for students enrolled in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is August 26.

There are less than two weeks left until the first day of school, which is August 26 for students enrolled in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

As students and parents across the nation prepare for the new school year, it is estimated that $8.5 billion will be spent just on clothing. That amount does not include purchases for backpacks, notebooks, pencils, binders and other supplies students will need for a successful year.

The cost of covering those expenses places a burden on many families in Mecklenburg County so community leaders and organizations are stepping up to help provide supplies for students who may otherwise go without.

Not only are these organizations helping students return to class with the supplies they need, but they are also helping them to start the new year off in style.

On August 24, some of Mecklenburg County’s highly skilled and generous barbers will be participating in Classic Cuts 4 Kids!

The event will allow students from low-income families to receive free haircuts in addition to providing them with school supplies.

“We are really excited to present this day to a group of children who are often under cared for and overlooked,” said Tammie T. Tolbert, founder of Charity Star Power, which is sponsoring the event. “The Classic Cuts 4 Kids program helps send children from low-income families back to school prepared with school items and confidence.”
