Belk Inc. is celebrating a milestone fewer than 10 percent of businesses ever achieve. The company is turning 125.

To celebrate, Belk is rolling out a series of special events – including community service projects, giveaways, in-store celebrity appearances and other initiatives –over the next five months.

As part of the commemoration, Belk is honoring its founding value of community involvement with 125 Days of Service.

The semi-annual Belk Charity Sale will be held April 27 from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. The four-hour, ticket-driven sale benefits charities and nonprofit organizations in Belk’s 16-state market area.

In 2012, the event raised $10 million for charity. Schools and nonprofits interested in participating can visit belk.com or contact a store manager for more information.

“We are excited about the Charity Sale,” said Belk President and COO John R. Belk. “It’s an easy way to partner with some great organizations in the community and raise money… It creates a lot of excitement and builds a lot of goodwill. It helps out a lot of organizations that are special to Belk.”

Belk is also sponsoring 125 Days of Prizes in which a prize valued from $500-$6,500 will be given daily. Customers can register on Belk’s Facebook page or on belk125prizes.com.

Belk was founded by William Henry Belk, who opened the first store in Monroe on May 29, 1888. The retailer has since grown to become the nation’s largest family-owned and operated department store and is in its third generation of family leadership.

John Belk said the celebration is not as much about looking back as it is looking towards the future.

“We are really talking about 125 years and growing,” he said. “Our business is moving so fast and there is so much change involved in it today.”

Belk said the biggest change is in the way consumers shop.

“We are having significant growth out of our internet business,” he said. “It’s growing close to 80 percent (year over year). Next year, we are planning for it to continue at that pace. It’s coming close to doubling every year.”
