NAACP threatens Charlotte boycotts

Posted by: Editor - Herb White on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 9:20:14 am

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg chapter of the NAACP made headlines this week by threatening to boycott major tourism events in Charlotte.

Chapter president Rev. Kojo Nantambu said the civil rights organization would consider the strategy starting with next month's CIAA basketball tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena. Other targets could include the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament and perhaps the 2012 Democratic National Convention, should Charlotte earn hosting rights. Nantambu's threats come on the heels of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' decision to use the Martin Luther King holiday as a snow makeup day. Jan. 17 was approved as a makeup day two years ago, but Nantambu insists CMS's decision disrespects King's memory as well as the wishes of African Americans who want the holiday left alone.

Would a Charlotte boycott work, given the impact it would have on businesses that depend on tourism dollars? Or is the NAACP taking on the wrong crusade when its focus should be on CMS policies?

they should noe boycott the convention because of NC's stance on gay marriage. move the whole convention out of the hateful state!

If Mr. Nantambu and crew want to do something of SIGNIFICANCE when it comes to CMS...........go after some of these wreckless/negligent parents who have no involvement with their children's education UNTIL they are either kicked out of school or jumped on at school......I would like to see the NAACP stage interventions around the schools (i.e. bus stops, street corners) to prevent truancy and persuade our YOUTH TO DO THE RIGHT THING. That needs to be the focus; because until you start with the CORE OF THE PROBLEM - bandaids will not be as effective. We are not necessarily battling Civil Rights at the forefront - we need LEADERS IN /AROUND OUR SCHOOLS TO HELP OUR "FUTURE LEADERS OF TOMORROW".

I'm surprised and suspicious that we have to go through these great lengths to get them to pick another day for this snow make-up day.

I feel the NAACP and it's leadership were grasping too far and on a weak platform by asking resdidents to boycott. What purpose does it serve. I agree with the previous post...... demand for a new leadership team for CMS; move Gorman out. On the surface the actions of the leadership team appear to be self serving..... cut the bottom to substantiate their salaries... makes no sense............

I feel strongly that the NAACP is ?taking on the wrong crusade when its focus should be on CMS policies?. To wage war against the whole of Charlotte-Mecklenburg for the actions of CMS comes across as a knee-jerk, stereo-typical reaction, instead of an intelligent, purposeful response. Many of the businesses that would loose substantial revenue if the CIAA and NCAA, for instance, decided to join Chapter president Rev. Kojo Nantambu?s crusade are predominately African-American. Are we just to consider them ?collateral damage?? I believe that a more effective and far-reaching plan would be to mount an election campaign that would oust the current CMS board (or, perhaps, just certain members) and replace them with individuals who take to heart the mission of equal, quality education for all Charlotte-Mecklenburg students. Such a campaign could even be connected to the efforts to get our President re-elected in 2012. With this type of effort, the NAACP could truly become a viable tool and credible voice of Charlotte?s African-American community.
